We wanted to let you know that the Party has been targeted by two cyber attacks over the past week. These attacks were sophisticated, and our IT provider has advised that this type of incident is rare.
It’s likely that we’ve been targeted because we are a political organisation and this is a busy period with events, fundraising, and payments happening.
What happened?
The attacks involved emails being sent from a waliberal.org.au address with a link to a fake invoice. If someone questioned the invoice, they would get a reply from the attacker, pretending to be the original sender and matching their usual tone. These replies were intercepted before the real account holder saw them.
What are we doing about it?
We’ve worked with our IT provider to fix the issue and understand how it happened. Our IT systems are secure and meet high standards, but we are taking extra steps to improve them further. Our IT team is doing a rapid review of what else can be done to strengthen security.
We can also confirm that the Party’s membership database was not impacted. It is managed by a separate system and provider, and no member details have been compromised.
What can you do?
If you receive an invoice from the Party that you weren’t expecting:
Don’t click on any links.
Contact the sender by phone to confirm the invoice.
You can also forward the email to membership@waliberal.org.au or accounts@waliberal.org.au to check if it’s legitimate.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work on keeping our systems secure.
